Luke Skywalker's Hand

So what ever DID happen to Luke Skywalker's hand and lightsaber after being severed by Darth Vader at the climax of The Empire Strikes Back?  Perhaps they're just floating in deep space through asteroid fields.  What are the chances of surviving that??

Or perhaps we'll find out in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens!
